World Press Freedom Day aims to promote an independent, free and pluralistic press.

The day was an initiative by the General Assembly of the United Nations to reinforce the right of the press to express and freedom of expression as a fundamental right.

The event is an initiative established in 1948 by the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
